Public projects and forks

Share a project with everyone and let people fork its releases.

A public project can be seen by anyone, with or without an account: its files, releases, branches, and release requests. Only its members can change it. Public projects are listed on Explore and on their owner’s profile page.

Make a project public

Owners and maintainers can change who sees a project under Settings on the project. Making it private again hides it from everyone who isn’t a member, including from Explore.

Choose a license

Set a license in the project’s settings so people know what they may do with your designs. A fork starts with the license of the project it came from.

Fork a release

To build on someone else’s design, open the project and choose Fork. Pick a release, a name, and an address. GigaCAD copies that release into a new project you own, as its v1, and links back to where it came from.

  • The fork’s history starts fresh. Its parts get their own identities, so nothing you do affects the original.
  • Its files count against your storage. Files you already store in your own projects don’t count twice.
  • A fork of a private project stays private, visible only to people you add.

Stars

Choose Star on a project to show you like it and to help others find it. Explore sorts by stars by default, and you can search it by name, owner, or description.

Each project on Explore shows a picture of the largest 3D file in its latest release, or in its latest version if it has no release yet. STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP, and IGES files are drawn from their geometry. SolidWorks files show the picture SolidWorks saved with them, from the view on screen when they were last saved, or are drawn from their STL export if they have one.
